This is the perfect program for those hoping to immerse themselves in French culture while also exploring focused themes on topics like literature, art history, film studies, and architecture. All courses are taught by faculty from a variety of Paris institutions and are all specialists in their respective fields.  France is the world's leading tourist destination as it is situated at the heart of western Europe, bordering on all the larger countries in the region - Italy, Spain, Germany, Belgium, and Switzerland.  As a country, France offers a fabulous historic heritage and probably the most diversified natural environment of any country in Europe. Its tourist attractions include fine vestiges of all European civilizations, from the Roman remains of Provence, through medieval castles and cathedrals, to the splendours of Versailles and the beauty of the nineteenth century Eiffel Tower.

CIEE programs include
  • Advising before you depart to set goals and answer questions
  • Optional on-site airport meet-and-greet
  • Full-time program leadership and support in your host city
  • Field trips and cultural activities
  • Insurance and other travel benefits, with CIEE iNext
  • 24/7 emergency on-site support

Language

Take our optional dynamic Communicative French Language class to learn the basic ins-and-outs of the French language, making your cultural discovery all the richer.

Orientation

Upon acceptance to the program, you will be required to attend a mandatory pre-departure orientation organized by SHU's Office of Global Affairs.  During this orientation, further details about the course and program details will be discussed.  Pre-departure orientations for Winter and Spring programs are held in November/December.  Pre-departure orientations for Summer and Fall programs are held in April.

You'll begin your study abroad experience in Paris even before leaving home by participating in a CIEE online pre-departure orientation. Meeting with students online, the resident director shares information about the program and site, highlighting issues that alumni have said are important, and giving you time to ask questions. The online orientation allows you to connect with others in the group, reflect on what you want to get out of the program, and learn what others in the group would like to accomplish. CIEE’s aim for the pre-departure orientation is simple—to help you understand more about the program, and identify your objectives so that you arrive well-informed and return home having made significant progress towards your goals.
If you’re looking to spend time in one of the world’s most prominent centers of culture, finance, and commerce, look no further than Paris. The capital of France - and the country’s most populous city - Paris is a top tourist destination and will make you fall in love with its historic landmarks, exquisite dining, and charming architecture.  The Seine River traverses the city; its waterways, quays, and bridges are major thoroughfares, as well as ways to see the city’s most famous monuments such as the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, and Notre Dame Cathedral. The city is known for its cafés (one for every 200 inhabitants), parks (Bois de Boulougne, Jardin de Luxembourg, and Bois de Vincennes), and street life and markets. Paris is also known as a center for culture, art, fashion, gastronomy, and intellectual life.

With classrooms, library space, computer areas and more, CIEE's open campus institute is less than a minute away from the Grands Boulevards, a 10-minute walk to the Palais Royal, and a 15-minute walk to the Louvre.
Students enroll in one 3-credit CIEE course per session. Classes includes a mix of both lecture and discussion as well as field trips, guest lectures, and other excursions that provide a unique, place-based academic experience. Students may also enroll in the one-credit Communicative French class in addition to their 3-credit class.

Courses are offered on a Monday-Friday schedule and may include evening sessions. Additionally, classes are augmented online through Canvas, our learning management system.

You’ll be graded on a combination of participation, written tests, short papers, and oral exposés. Participation and punctuality in all classes weigh heavily in student evaluations.

You must have an overall GPA of 2.5.

Course Credit

SHU approved courses taken on this program will count towards your general graduation total.  Course grades will also factor into your cumulative Grade Point Average (courses are not available for Pass/Fail).

Students can reference the Course Equivalency Database to see which courses have already been approved.  Approval for courses not yet approved can be requested through the Office of Global Affairs.  Email adlon-placee@sacredheart.edu for more information.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

Scholarships are a great way to support the cost of your study abroad experience.  In an effort to encourage you to study abroad, and to make a study abroad experience more accessible, the SHU Office of Global Affairs prepared a list of scholarships and financial resources.  Please note that this is not a conclusive list but it will help you start your search process.  The OGA encourages you to apply and take advantage of as many relevant scholarship opportunities as possible.

Please speak with Student Financial Assistance to determine how your aid package will apply towards studying abroad.

Please ensure applications for the Welch Tuition Waiver, Thomas More Honors Program Scholarship, and/or Matthew R Dalling Scholarship are submitted by the specified deadline.  Applications and corresponding deadlines can be found in your Study Abroad Account.  Failure to submit applications by the specified deadline may cause the scholarship dispersal to be significantly delayed.
  • If you receive scholarships, grants, or financial aid through SHU, these awards are posted to your Student Account according to the normal disbursement schedule.

Please contact the Office of Global Affairs directly for further information.
Last year, CIEE awarded more than 1,000 scholarships per term for a total of $5 million, helping more students get on planes and live their dreams in faraway places than any other organization.  Students who apply to this program are eligible for the following scholarships and grants:
  • Ping Scholarships for Academic Excellence
  • Global Access Initiative (GAIN) Grants
  • CIEE Gilman Go Global Grant
To be considered, submit the CIEE Scholarships & Grants application within your CIEE program application. Learn more at the Scholarships & Grants section of our website here.
